  1. Sex determination is the process by which the 
  2. sex of an organism is determined. In many 
  3. species, the sex of an individual is dictated 
  4. by the two sex chromosomes (X and Y) it 
  5. receives from its parents. In mammals, some 
  6. plants, and a few insects, males are XY, and 
  7. females XX; in birds, reptiles, some 
  8. amphibians, and butterflies the reverse is 
  9. the case. In bees and wasps, males are 
  10. produced from unfertilized eggs, females from 
  11. fertilized eggs.
